The Saturday, March 30, 2013 Oregonian did a story on the boulders to be used in the nature based play area.  Even without being officially in the nature based play area they are already being enjoyed.  Check out the gallery for more photographs of the boulders.

There is a SOLVE event scheduled again this year on Saturday, April 20th from 9 am untl 1 pm.  Join other Friends of Nadaka to help improve the park.  If you know  students looking for community volunteer opportunities, Scouts, ball or soccer teams, church groups or businesses please pass on this information.

You can go to this SOLVE link to register yourself or your group and find out more information about the cleanup.  Just click on the button “Register Now“.

Read this article and you will see why you should be taking a walk through Nadaka.

On December 18, 2012 the Gresham City Council unanimously approved the proposed revisions to the Nadaka Neighborhood Park Master Plan.  Thank you City Council.  And thanks to MIG, the Project Committee and the City staff for all the work in helping to craft the new plan and preparing and making the presentation.  Lee Dayfield joined the City staff in the presentation to City Council.

This Master Plan will guide work and activities, including creating a community garden, building pathways, installing a nature based play area and constructing a picnic shelter.  You can view the Nadaka Master Plan here.

On December 18, 2012, the Metro Council unanimously approved a resolution referring a five-year parks and natural areas levy to voters in May 2013. If approved by voters, the levy will provide much needed funding for the restoration and long-term maintenance of natural areas that Metro has acquired and permanently protected using funds from its 1995 and 2006 voter-approved bond measures.

At just under ten cents per thousand dollars of assessed value, the levy is estimated to cost the average household about $20 a year and will generate an estimated $10 million a year for the purposes of maintaining and improving water quality, protecting fish and wildlife habitat and preserving regional parks, natural areas and stream frontages.

Thank you to NFN Investments, owner of the Pine Square Apartments next to Nadaka Nature Park for paying to fix the fence and open a proper entry from Nadaka into the apartment complex.  They also paid for the new signs along the fence to show the new entrance.

Thank you to Albertson’s, 451 NE 181st for a donation of hot drinks and fruit for our December 1st sheet mulching event as well as their delicious subs for the volunteers.

Thank you to the City of Gresham for the use of their many tools, wheelbarrows and porta potty for the December 1st sheet mulching event.  Also thanks for all the work the Parks Maintenance crew did in providing the leaves and bark mulch.

Thank you to the Columbia Slough Watershed Council for helping organize the December 1st event thru advertising and providing a way for volunteers to register.  Also thanks for providing some of the tools and wheelbarrows needed.

Thank you to the Audubon Society of Portland for helping organize the December 1st event and getting the word out.

Thank you Jazzy Bagel for the mountain of wonderful bagels.

Special thanks to Lora Price for her knowledge about sheet mulching, helping to organize the December 1st event, picking up all the cardboard, feather meal and making arrangements for all the other materials needed to do the sheet mulching.

Extra special thanks to the 52 volunteers, including the Four Cities Youth Peer Court group, who showed up on December 1st to help sheet mulch the future community garden. Outstanding job!

Every contribution by an individual, business, organization, church, etc is greatly appreciated,  The Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project cannot be completed without the participation of the community and that can be done in many different ways.  Just volunteering your time is a great way to help make this project happen. Financial contributions are always welcome and can be made on our Donation & Get Involved page.  Become a Friend of Nadaka.  Financial contributions made thru the Columbia Slough Watershed Council on behalf of Nadaka are tax deductible.

On December 8th, our partner, the Audubon Society of Portland, is putting on a forum to exchange ideas about how to effectively carry out neighborhood-driven greenspace projects. Don’t miss this opportunity to discuss strategies for outreach, community organizing, and fundraising for trails, community gardens, natural area acquisition and other projects in our neighborhoods!  One of the presentations will be on the Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project.  To register for this event visit the Audubon website.

Thanks to those who volunteered their time to canvas on behalf of Nadaka on November 17 – Jim Labbe, Gladys Ruiz, Tamara Layden and Lee Dayfield.  We knocked on at least 200 doors at the Pine Square Apartments, Madrona Place Apartments and Rockwood Building apartments.  We were able to personally speak with 75 individuals about the Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project and invite them to the Community Garden Sheet Mulching event on December 1st.  Flyers about the event were left at each apartment door.  This type of outreach is the best!
